The Funky Penguin in Barcelona

My two worlds collided for a week of work, fun and music at the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona last week. I was there presenting my company's platform as well as DJing our party. It was my first trip to Europe and needless to say, I want to go back... often!

I went to an FC Barcelona match, visited the Sagrada Familia, went digging at Wah Wah, ate the best meals of my life and partied at some incredible clubs.

My company threw a party on the second day of the show that I DJ'd. The theme was the Funky Penguin. Guess who's idea that was?! I played 4 hours of banging funk and soul that was as well received as it's ever been. People couldn't believe that I was an employee of the company and not a professional DJ. I was getting offers to play events all over and one guy even said I played the best music he's ever heard! I guess the European corporate crowd is a little different than the San Jose club crowd. Who knew? :-)

On the weekend before I left, I recorded a Serato set to hand out as a promo CD to employees of my company and attendees of our party. I now present to you that mix in mp3 format of course.

Download the Funky Penguin!

View all the pictures from my trip

I did a guest mix for the ever popular rare groove radio show Waxing Deep out of Canada. It's 60+ minutes of African and Brazilian records, my latest DJ/collector passion. Loads of goodies in here, some classic and some insanely rare. There's even a couple minutes of phone interview before the mix. Be nice, it was my first interview :-) Download Now!

Famous New Orleans Po Boys - A Benefit Mix

In the wake of the events taking place in New Orleans, I have, among other things, decided to put together a mix using all my records from the greatest musical city in the world. I have always been after New Orleans records for their unique sound of funk and soul. All proceeds from this CD will be donated directly to Habitat for Humanity, an equally important yet less publicized charity as Red Cross. CDs are $10 with $2 shipping and handling and will each be personally signed by me!

Stuff in the Works

After the success of my Summer Soulstice mix, people have been asking me what I'm working on next and when I'll be playing a show. Well, first off, one thing I'm working on is this site as you may or may not have noticed. It'll be more blog oriented with fresh content. I am also in the process of taking pictures and reviewing the top tier of my collection. I desperately need to review the Virtual Wall of Fame as it's super old.
As for music, I have a few things in the works. I'm updating my demo mix again to pass out to clubs and bars to get some gigs. This'll be the third time I've redone it, and each time it gets more dancefloor oriented while still keeping my musical preferences. That should be ready in a couple of weeks at which point I will take them along with my fancy new business cards to as many places as I can. I'm also working on another mixtape that will be uptempo, rare funk and soul. As if that's not enough to keep me busy, I'm taking a crack at producing a few of my own tracks that I may press on vinyl. That's further on down the road as I'm still a beginner at that.
Stay tuned everybody and please spread the word. I finally feel comfortable enough with my skills and performance to market myself and get the name out there. I'm not another cookie cutter DJ, so it will take a lot of support for me to succeed, but it will be worth the effort. Thanks!

Summer Soulstice 2005 Mix

My highly anticipated summertime mix is complete and available for download. The mix was originally meant to be a live performance at a pool party at my house a few days after the actual solstice, but circumstances prevented that from happening. Instead of scrapping it, I decided to record it and give it out. It's a chill mix with a soulful summertime vibe that is perfect for relaxing. Very different from the usual upbeat stuff I play, but still has all the mixing and blending style elements that I'm known for.
